The sharp rise in dengue cases

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) issued a warning on Tuesday, stating that dengue fever cases are steadily increasing across Europe, and some infections could become severe. The Asian tiger mosquito, an invasive species found mainly in tropical regions, has been detected in 13 EU countries. This discovery has been linked to a significant increase in dengue cases this year.


According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control,

mosquito populations have increased in Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, and Spain. The Asian tiger mosquito is a vector for diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya fever, and Zika virus, which cause millions of cases worldwide annually and wreak havoc in tropical countries. This species was previously found only in the warmer regions of Asia, Africa, and the Americas. However, experts claim that rising summer temperatures create an ideal environment for the spread of these mosquitoes. This is due to increased travel and higher temperatures in Europe caused by carbon pollution from burning coal, oil, and gas. Compared to 71 cases in 2022, 130 locally transmitted cases of dengue fever were recorded in the European Union in 2023.
