What Distinguishes Thermal Water from Tap Water?

Thermal spring water acquires minerals as it percolates through underground rock over hundreds or thousands of years. The result is water with a specific and stable mineral composition not found in ordinary tap water. A well-studied example is the water from the La Roche-Posay thermal springs, which contains 149 mg/L of calcium, 387 mg/L of bicarbonate, 31.6 mg/L of silicate, and 4.4 mg/L of magnesium, in addition to trace amounts of selenium, strontium, and zinc. Its pH is 7, which is neutral and close enough to the slightly acidic pH of the skin surface (approximately 4.5 to 5.5) to avoid any adverse effects. These minerals aren't limited to dissolved solids. Selenium acts as an antioxidant, helping to protect skin cells from damage caused by UV radiation and pollution. Silica supports the structural proteins that maintain skin elasticity. Calcium plays a role in skin cell regeneration. Bicarbonate helps regulate pH. The composition and concentration of thermal water vary depending on the spring, and therefore its properties differ between brands. Research indicates that thermal water with a low total mineral content (less than 1 g/L of dissolved solids) significantly improves skin smoothness and comfort compared to water with a high mineral content.

While there is less strong evidence to support the effectiveness of popular thermal water sprays sold by skincare brands, their mineral content can still soothe irritation and support the skin's protective barrier.

The improvements are measurable, not just a subjective feeling

Multiple studies have tracked standardized severity scores and found significant reductions after treatment. One trial involving 77 patients with mild to severe psoriasis showed that just one week of thermal bathing reduced symptom severity by about 11.5%, while two weeks resulted in a reduction of approximately 13.5%.
